What's a Food System?
What does "built environement" mean?
The Collaborative Partners (CP): For a complete list, see the website! We can provide you with contact information for any of these partners.
The Focus Communities (FC): Two focus communiites were selected on February 11th by the Site Selection Committee (made up of experts in food & fitness, as well as representatives from 8 king county cities/neighborhoods). One neighborhood in Seattle and one in South King County is where we will focus our planning for the Initiative.
The Co conveners (CC): Staff at WSU King County Extension and Public Health Seattle and King County. There are approximately a dozen staff who have been involved thus far with several others available on an as needed basis.
Assessment Team (AT) and Evaluators: The team is made up of individuals from the Univ of WA, Washington State U, Public Health SKC, and our evaluators from Group Health Community Foundation.
Youth Coordinator and Youth Serving Organizations: The youth-focused work will be led by the International District Housing Alliance and is supported by a grant from the Seattle Foundation. There are approximately 12 youth serving organizations involved in youth-focused work with the Initiative at this time.
Technical Assistance Providers (TAP): These are experts in the areas of the food system, built environment, youth, cultural competence, communications, and evaluation who have been granted by the Kellogg Foundation to serve all 9 communities in the FFI.
National Advisory Committee (NAC): These are experts across the country and beyond who are working directly with the Kellogg Foundation to advise them.
FOOD SYSTEM:
First of all, a system can be understood as a group of interacting, interrelated, and oftentimes interdependent elements that function together as a complex, unified whole.
The term "food system" is used frequently in discussions about nutrition, food, health, community economic development and agriculture. The food system includes all processes involved in keeping us fed: growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, transporting, marketing, consuming and disposing of food.
BUILT ENVIRONMENT:
Built environment refers to community design—and the design of our communities does have an effect on our health and well-being. Healthy community design can benefit us all in very important ways. School design is one important way that the built environment may affect a child’s health (Can a child safely walk to school?), another example is parks and green spaces (research increasingly suggests that children benefit from the opportunity to play outdoors where they can explore and enjoy natural environments).

Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Call for Proposals (CFP) for Healthy Kids, Healthy Communities – Leading Sites
Seattle is one of 15 communities across the nation that is being invited to apply for Leading Sites funding – up to $400,000 for up to 4 years beginning on January 1, 2009. The CFP (attached) provides detailed information about the program, proposal requirements and timelines, selection criteria, links to the RWJF Grantmaking Online system and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), and more.
Please be reminded that the Foundation will only accept ONE proposal from a given community. Communities submitting multiple proposals will become ineligible for funding. Therefore, we encourage you to work collaboratively to determine the appropriate mix of partners (including others who should be recruited), as well as the proposed lead agency and project director.
A conference call for interested applicants will be held on Monday, June 16 from 3:00-4:30 pm Eastern Time. To register for the call, please send an email with your name and contact information to info@healthykidshealthycommunities.org with the subject line “Conference Call Registration” by 12:00 pm Eastern Time on Thursday, June 11. In response, you will receive dial-in information and an agenda. The call will be taped and available for one month for those who are unable to participate on June 16. To prepare for the call, please carefully review the CFP and FAQs. Ample time will be provided to answer your questions. Program-related questions should be directed to info@healthykidshealthycommunities.org and technical questions related to the Grantmaking Online site should be directed to techinfo@healthykidshealthycommunities.org. Please review the CFP, FAQs and the Grantmaking Online site prior to contacting us with questions, as they contain useful and important background information.
