WSU King County Extension is cultivating a healthier, more sustainable food and farming system for King County. We’re taking a systems-based approach to improving sustainable farming, food production, processing and distribution, food access, nutrition education, and community and economic development.

WSU King County Extension Agriculture programs work in collaboration with King County Conservation District , King County Agriculture in addition to many community partners and granting agencies.

King County Farms Then and Now

Farming in Western Washington began as an industry in the early 1820’s. Currently, just 3% of all King County lands are farms. Most farmland is located in river valleys, areas not well suited to residential, commercial, or industrial land uses; yet, because of urban growth, agriculture must compete with these other land uses. Agriculture in King County is characterized by small-scale, part-time farming operations specializing in livestock, nursery and greenhouse products, vegetables and fresh fruit.

Agent Floyd Rader began work as the first King County Extension agent in 1914. Pioneer extension educators established a philosophy that's still relevant today: "helping farmers to help themselves."
