In response to the shifting demographics of Skagit County's farm sector, WSU Skagit County will offer upcoming Cultivating Success courses in both English and Spanish, using the Adult Dual Language Model.

The first bilingual Cultivating Success course, Sustainable Small Farming, will be offered Wednesday evenings, 6-9pm, September 2nd through November 18th. The course helps people who want to start a small farm take a realistic look at their goals and resources and decide what type of small acreage enterprise is right for them. Participants are exposed to all types of farming and ranching systems, meet local farmers, and take field trips to local farms.

A second bilingual course, Agricultural Entrepreneurship and Business Planning, helps participants produce a completed business plan. It will be offered January through March 2010.

Both courses will take place at the WSU Northwest Research and Extension Center, located at 16650 State Route 536. Individuals who complete both courses will be eligible to participate in a new Farm Business Incubator that will provide beginning and minority farmers affordable to access to land, water, farm financing, and technical assistance with production and business development.

For more information about bilingual courses and/or the Farm Business Incubator, please contact Sarita Schaffer at 206-914-7948 or email her at sschaffer@wsu.edu. Spanish spoken/Se habla Espaol.
